Belgium to Build 150 MW Hydrogen Electrolysis Capacity by 2026 with EU Support

ELECTROLYZERHYDROGEN

Belgium's Ministry of Energy launched its first hydrogen strategy in October 2022, aiming for 150 MW of hydrogen electrolysis capacity by 2026. Supported by EU initiatives, the Belgian Hydrogen Council oversees infrastructure, market innovation, and partnerships.

Projects like GIGA-SCALES, backed by an €11 million grant, aim for 20 GW annual capacity of alkaline electrolyser membranes. The Be-Hy consortium is developing Europe's first commercial hydrogen solar park in Namur, scheduled for 2026, utilizing 3 MW solar panels and a 1.2 MW electrolyser.

The LIFE NEW HYTS project focuses on green hydrogen for heavy-duty vehicles. HYDRA, funded by €3.8 million from Horizon Europe, ensures safety in hydrogen production and storage. Plans include 100-160 km of hydrogen pipelines by 2026 and importing 20 TWh of green hydrogen by 2030, enhancing energy independence.
