Bengaluru Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar Calls for Review of High-Rise Building Restrictions Near Airports
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that high-rise development in Bengaluru is stunted due to restrictions from civil aviation and defense authorities. These limitations around HAL Airport, Kempegowda Airport, Jakkur Airfield, and Yelahanka Air Force Base hinder urban planning and infrastructure growth. He has requested a review of these norms to align Bengaluru's building height regulations with other metro cities. The central government has agreed to reassess the situation in coordination with defense authorities.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar highlighted that high-rise construction in Bengaluru is significantly limited by restrictions imposed by civil aviation and defense establishments, impacting the city's growth.
Areas around HAL Airport, Kempegowda Airport, Jakkur Airfield, and Yelahanka Air Force Base have strict building height limits, making it challenging to address the city's growing population and infrastructure demands. Shivakumar discussed this issue with Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, advocating for relaxation of norms to bring Bengaluru in line with other metro cities.
He noted that despite the introduction of a premium Floor Area Ratio, developers cannot utilize it due to these curbs, affecting development and government revenue. The Centre has indicated a review of the matter will be conducted.
