Benton Harbor-St. Joseph Wastewater Treatment Plant Launches Heat and Power Project
The Benton Harbor-St. Joseph Wastewater Treatment Plant has implemented a Combined Heat and Power Generation Project to enhance operational efficiency and lower costs. This initiative, funded entirely by the plant, began in August 2022.

The Combined Heat and Power Generation Project at the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph Wastewater Treatment Plant aims to optimize energy use and reduce operational costs. It employs digesters, generators, and energy recovery systems to produce usable energy for the facility.
Heat generated from the power production is redirected into the water system, minimizing reliance on boilers for heating digesters. This project, which commenced in August 2022, reflects a strategic investment in sustainable practices within wastewater management. As plants adopt similar technologies, industry-wide shifts towards energy efficiency may accelerate, impacting operational budgets and sustainability targets.
