University of Palermo Wins IWA Award for Water Reuse Project
The University of Palermo has been awarded the IWA MTSG Project Innovation Award 2026 for its water reuse initiative, emphasizing its contribution to circular economy practices in water management. This recognition highlights the university's role in addressing critical water resource challenges in Sicily, particularly amid climate change.

The University of Palermo received the IWA MTSG Project Innovation Award 2026 for a water reuse system developed at its Viale delle Scienze campus. This project, part of Horizon 2020 and PNRR initiatives, focuses on sustainable wastewater treatment and aims to enhance the circular economy in water use.
The award was presented at the IWA Regional Membrane Technology Conference in Shanghai, where Giorgio Mannina discussed the project's results and their implications for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This accolade marks the third international recognition for the project, following the Water Europe Innovation Award 2024 and the Innovation Prize Water Reuse Europe 2023. The university's efforts reflect a need for diverse water supply sources and improved efficiency in wastewater management, crucial for agriculture and human consumption in a region facing severe climate impacts.
