Beyond Batteries has launched as the UK's first commercial sodium battery producer, located in Falmer. Founded by Colin Fulker during the 2020 lockdown, the company began by replacing lead-acid batteries in camper vans before targeting commercial sectors relying on diesel generators.

The sodium-ion batteries provide safety and sustainability benefits, although they have lower energy density than lithium options. The firm aims to develop its own battery management systems and is working on new products to replace lead-acid batteries in fire alarm backup systems, with expected lifespans of 10 years.
