Bhutan Explores New Ports for Boulder Export Enhancement
The Bhutanese government is advancing discussions to establish new ports, including Jogighopa in Assam, to facilitate boulder exports. This initiative aims to alleviate congestion at current ports and improve trade routes with Bangladesh.

Bhutan is actively pursuing the establishment of new ports to enhance its boulder export capabilities. Economic Minister Loknath Sharma confirmed ongoing discussions for the Jogighopa port in Assam and additional ports between Chilmari and Narayanganj, pending approval from the Bangladeshi government.
Current exports rely solely on the congested Dhubri port, which faces operational challenges due to restricted access times and seasonal water depth issues. The minister also highlighted the need for more discharge ports in Bangladesh to expedite the clearance process. Additionally, a 500KW mini-hydropower project in Lunana is set to serve 187 households at an estimated cost of Nu 63 million, although transportation costs are significant.
