Biden Administration Cancels Twin Metals Nickel Mine Lease, Impacting U.S. Supply
The Biden administration has canceled the 56-year lease for the Twin Metals nickel project, leaving only the Eagle Mine operational. This cancellation could exacerbate U.S. dependence on foreign nickel sources amid rising global demand for battery minerals.

The U.S. will now rely solely on the Eagle Mine in Michigan, which produces 1.5% of global nickel supply but has an estimated three years of operational life remaining. The cancellation of the Twin Metals project, which would have been the only nickel mine in the U.S., eliminates potential domestic production amid increasing global demand for critical minerals.
The World Bank projects that by 2050, production of battery minerals, including nickel, could need to increase by 500% to support advanced energy technologies. Since 2015, U.S. nickel production has decreased by 8,000 tons, highlighting the vulnerability of the domestic market.
