Bihar Initiates Pilot Project for Treated Sewage Water Reuse in Patna
Bihar's urban development department is launching a pilot project this summer to reuse treated sewage water for irrigation and civic purposes. This initiative aims to reduce wastewater discharge into the Ganga and enhance urban greenery.

The Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (Buidco) will implement a pilot project in Patna this summer, utilizing treated sewage water from local treatment plants for irrigation and other civic applications. This initiative will redirect treated water away from the Ganga, employing a network for use in greenery, road washing, and other non-potable purposes.
Buidco operates 19 sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Bihar, with 13 located in Patna. The project is expected to conserve groundwater and contribute to urban beautification aligned with the Namami Gange programme. Implementation plans, including infrastructure details, are being finalized for launch as water demand peaks during the dry season.
