Birmingham City Council Delays Vote on New Data Center Regulations
Birmingham City Council has postponed a vote on proposed regulations for data centers until early June. A moratorium on new applications has been in effect since March 3 to allow for regulatory development, addressing energy, water, and environmental concerns.

The Birmingham City Council will delay its vote on new data center regulations until early June, following a moratorium on new applications that began on March 3. The draft regulations define data center classifications, particularly focusing on hyperscale centers, which must adhere to 19 outlined conditions, including the use of closed-loop cooling systems and a minimum property size of five acres.
The proposed rules aim to mitigate environmental impacts and regulate energy usage while ensuring the distance between hyperscale data centers and residential areas is at least 500 feet. Business leaders have expressed concerns that these regulations could deter potential investment in Birmingham's data center sector. Environmental advocates view the draft as a step toward more responsible development.
