Birmingham Initiates Hydrogen Bus Pilot Amid Broader Electrification Efforts
Birmingham has launched a pilot project with 20 hydrogen fuel cell buses, marking a significant step in urban transport sustainability. However, the city has not fully converted its entire fleet to hydrogen, as electric buses also play a crucial role in its zero-emission strategy.

Birmingham City Council has deployed 20 hydrogen fuel cell buses, manufactured by Wrightbus, as part of the Clean Air Hydrogen Bus Pilot. This initiative aims to assess the practicality of hydrogen as a sustainable transport solution, with National Express West Midlands operating the buses.
In parallel, the West Midlands Combined Authority plans to integrate 170 new electric buses, raising the total electric fleet to 329 by April 2025, accounting for about 25% of the operator's total fleet. This dual approach highlights the city's commitment to a progressive transition towards zero-emission public transport, utilizing both hydrogen and electric technologies.
As operators like National Express strive for a fully zero-emission fleet by 2030, the ongoing development of refueling infrastructure at Tyseley Energy Park is essential. The integration of various technologies reflects the complexity of achieving sustainable urban mobility.
