Blackstone Seeks Approval for PNM Purchase Amid Concerns Over Project Jupiter in New Mexico
Blackstone's request to acquire the Public Service Company of New Mexico raises alarms due to the proposed Project Jupiter, which involves data centers powered by 2,880 megawatts of gas-fired turbines. This project could lead to emissions of 13 million metric tons of greenhouse gases annually, significantly exceeding emissions from existing PNM plants.

Blackstone is seeking approval from the Public Regulation Commission to purchase the Public Service Company of New Mexico, raising concerns among New Mexicans. The proposed Project Jupiter includes data centers in southeastern New Mexico that would utilize up to 2,880 megawatts of gas-fired turbines with a lifespan of 30 to 40 years, connected to a microgrid in El Paso Electric's area. If approved, emissions could reach 13 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent annually, over three times the emissions from PNM's Four Corners coal plant and gas-fired plants combined.
