BLM Seeks Comments on Geothermal Lease Sale; Senate Votes to Lift Mining Ban Near Boundary Waters
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is gathering public input on 68 geothermal parcels spanning 197,852 acres in New Mexico, with a lease sale scheduled for June 16, 2026. Concurrently, the U.S. Senate has voted to repeal a 20-year mining moratorium near the Boundary Waters, facilitating the Twin Metals project in Minnesota.

The BLM is collecting comments until May 11, 2026, regarding 68 parcels in New Mexico that may be leased for geothermal development, with the official sale notice set for May 1. Proceeds from leases will be divided among the U.S.
Treasury, local counties, and the State of New Mexico. The Senate's recent vote on April 16 to overturn a mining ban near the Boundary Waters brings Twin Metals closer to mining permits for an underground copper mine in Minnesota.
This resolution, driven by Republican interests, aims to accelerate resource development while potentially compromising environmental protections. The Congressional Review Act has been leveraged to expedite such regulatory changes, affecting various environmental safeguards.
