Blue Origin and NASA Collaborate on NEO Hunter for Planetary Defense Against Asteroid Collisions
Blue Origin has partnered with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech to develop the NEO Hunter mission, aimed at detecting and deflecting potentially dangerous asteroids. Utilizing the Blue Ring space platform, the mission will deploy mini-satellites for asteroid analysis and employ ion beam technology for trajectory modification. The project reflects the growing role of private companies in global strategic issues, particularly in planetary defense.
Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, is collaborating with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech on the NEO Hunter mission to identify and potentially deflect hazardous asteroids. The mission will utilize the Blue Ring modular space platform, which can transport 4,000 kg of cargo and operate in various orbital zones.
It will deploy cubesats for asteroid detection and analysis, employing ion beam technology for trajectory modification. If necessary, a kinetic impact method will be used to alter an asteroid's path. This initiative underscores the increasing involvement of private entities in planetary defense and aims to address the rising concerns over near-Earth objects.
