Bologna Officially Nominated as European Frontier AI Hub
Bologna has been officially nominated as a central node for Frontier AI by the Italian government, aiming to establish a European autonomous capability for advanced AI models. This initiative highlights Italy's commitment to leading in AI technology, reducing reliance on American and Chinese infrastructures.

The nomination of Bologna as a key hub for Frontier AI was announced during a meeting on May 11 between Italian Minister Anna Maria Bernini and European Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva. The Tecnopolo DAMA is central to this initiative, housing Leonardo, a powerful supercomputer enhanced by the LISA program for AI applications.
Currently, IT4LIA, the sole AI Factory in Italy recognized by the EU, has activated nearly 500 projects, providing over 550 million hours of computing time valued at more than 130 million euros in 2025. Despite ongoing installations, IT4LIA began delivering services through Leonardo in April 2025.
The candidacy builds on a strategic framework developed since 2017, aiming to position Bologna as a significant European scientific hub. Competitive pressures exist from other European cities for the Frontier AI node.
