Bordeaux Port Focuses on Reindustrialization Amid Declining Traffic
Bordeaux Port's new leadership aims to revitalize its operations through reindustrialization and decarbonization strategies. The port anticipates only modest growth in cargo traffic, emphasizing the need for diversification in its economic activities.

The Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux, under new president Ivan Martin, is facing a 6% decline in cargo traffic in early 2026, attributed to a 10% drop in fossil fuel volumes. Current projections suggest only 6.7 million tonnes of traffic by 2030, down from 7.8 million a decade ago.
The port is shifting focus towards growth in sectors such as materials for the Bordeaux-Toulouse high-speed rail, nuclear energy, and recycling activities. With 800 hectares of land available for development, initiatives include renewable energy projects and new industrial ventures like a salmon farm and a cobalt and nickel refinery. A task force with local authorities is being established to further enhance regional development.
