Botswana Launches BOTSAT-1: First Satellite Enhancing Agriculture, Security, and Internet Connectivity

SPACE ECONOMY

On March 15, 2025, Botswana launched its first satellite, BOTSAT-1, via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, joining 16 African nations with space capabilities. Developed by local engineers at Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) in partnership with global firms, the project cost $2.19 million and took four years.

BOTSAT-1 features a Mantis Hyperspectral Imager for monitoring crops and environmental conditions, transmitting data six times daily from a ground station at BIUST. The satellite aims to improve rural internet connectivity, enhance national security through border monitoring, and aid disaster response.

It also supports Botswana's broader space ambitions, including BOTSAT-2. With this launch, Botswana contributes to Africa's projected $22 billion space economy, fostering local engineering expertise and economic diversification.
