Bougainville Landowners Demand Halt to Panguna Mine Activities
Landowners in Bougainville have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Bougainville Copper Limited and Lloyds Metals to cease all mining activities at the Panguna mine site, citing unauthorized entry. This follows tensions regarding the mine's redevelopment amid ongoing community consultations and claims of insufficient engagement from local authorities.

Landowners at the Panguna mine have demanded Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) and Lloyds Metals and Energy Ltd (LMEL) cease all activities and remove personnel within 24 hours. The landowners assert that the companies' actions are unauthorized, illegal, and lack consent as no Land Access and Compensation Agreement has been signed.
This follows the Autonomous Bougainville Government's (ABG) efforts to redevelop the mine, which has been closed for 37 years due to historical conflicts. While some local leaders claim consultations have been sufficient, dissenting voices have raised concerns about the pace and transparency of the redevelopment process. The outcome could impact future mining operations and community relations in the region.
