Bratislava LNG Terminal Project Canceled Due to Financial and Strategic Reasons
The LNG terminal project in Bratislava has completed its pre-project preparation phase but will not proceed to implementation. Public Ports stated that the project lacked a financial support and has limited demand for LNG as a fuel. Greenpeace Slovakia criticized the terminal since 2021, citing safety risks and environmental concerns. The project faced no approval for a timeline and was deemed a misallocation of public funds. Alternatives proposed include direct electrification for short inland waterways and green hydrogen for longer routes.

The LNG terminal project in Bratislava will not move to implementation following the completion of its pre-project preparation phase. Public Ports confirmed no approved timeline or decision to proceed, citing financial and strategic reasons.
The project failed to secure funding from the AFIF initiative and noted limited demand for LNG in inland waterway transport. Greenpeace Slovakia has opposed the terminal since 2021, highlighting safety and environmental risks. They argue for direct electrification in short-haul transport and exclusively green hydrogen for longer trips as sustainable alternatives.
