Brazil Approves March 2026 Auctions for 125 GW of Thermal and Hydro Capacity, Battery Auction Guidelines Pending
Brazil's electricity regulator, ANEEL, has approved reserve capacity auctions for thermal and hydroelectric plants totaling over 125 GW. Scheduled for March 18 and 20, 2026, the auctions will include second LRCAP for hydro and thermoelectric plants fueled by natural gas and coal, and third LRCAP for diesel and biodiesel plants. Guidelines for a separate battery storage auction remain pending despite over 20 GW of projects under development.

Brazil's electricity regulator, ANEEL, has approved reserve capacity auctions set for March 18 and 20, 2026, for thermal and hydro plants, with more than 125 GW registered. The auctions include a second LRCAP for hydroelectric and thermoelectric plants utilizing natural gas and coal, and a third LRCAP for plants powered by diesel, fuel oil, and biodiesel.
ANEEL has also recommended to the Ministry of Mines and Energy the consideration of regionalized auctions. Guidelines for a battery storage auction remain pending, while over 20 GW of battery projects are currently in development.
