Brazil Delays Supercomputer Procurement for National AI Plan Due to Infrastructure Issues
The Brazilian federal government has delayed the procurement of a supercomputer vital for the Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Plan (PBIA) to late March or early April from the initial October 2025 timeline. This postponement stems from infrastructure challenges and site selection for the installation.
The MCTI is managing the project, with a projected cost of R$ 1.8 billion within a broader R$ 23 billion investment plan through 2028. The initial site, LNCC in Petrópolis, was rejected due to energy costs and electrical capacity issues.
The current option is a Telebras data center in Brasília. The new supercomputer aims to significantly enhance processing capabilities for AI training and establish a government cloud for sensitive data.
