Brazil Plans Major Hydrogen Hub with German Collaboration at Hannover Messe 2026
Brazil, as the partner country at Hannover Messe 2026, announced a €2 billion hydrogen project. This initiative, involving companies like Thyssenkrupp Uhde and Siemens, aims to enhance Brazil's hydrogen economy and reduce fertilizer imports.

The Brazilian government, led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, announced a significant hydrogen project named 'Morro Pintado' at Hannover Messe 2026. With an investment of approximately €2 billion and a planned capacity exceeding 1 GW, the project aims to produce green hydrogen in Areia Branca, located about 280 km from Natal.
Key German companies such as Thyssenkrupp Uhde and Siemens are involved, indicating strong bilateral cooperation. Brazil's energy mix, predominantly renewable, supports low production costs for hydrogen, estimated by McKinsey at $1.50 per kg by 2030.
The project aligns with Brazil's National Hydrogen Program and aims to reduce dependency on fertilizer imports from the Middle East. The establishment of this hub could significantly impact hydrogen prices and open new markets for German businesses, although further details and timelines are still pending.
