Brazil's BioLPG Production Faces Glycerin Refining Challenges Amid Ongoing Geopolitical Tensions
Brazil's bioLPG production potential is hindered by glycerin quality and market dynamics, as geopolitical tensions impact fuel prices. The dual-fuel ethanol system provides a buffer against oil shocks, showcasing Brazil's biofuel resilience.

Brazil's biodiesel output reached 8.65 million tons in 2025, yielding approximately 865,000 tons of crude glycerin. However, the glycerin produced is primarily crude and requires additional refining, which large biodiesel producers are not investing in.
The lack of domestic investment in glycerin refining limits the bioLPG market's supply and competitiveness, as producers prioritize export markets. Meanwhile, Brazil's dual-fuel ethanol fleet helps stabilize gasoline prices amid rising international fuel costs, with gasoline prices rising only 5% in March compared to 30% in the U.S. Analysts suggest Brazil's biofuels sector could mitigate further market volatility, but challenges in glycerin refining must be addressed for bioLPG to become a viable option in the short term.
