Brenham City Officials Address Concerns Over Viridien Technology Facility Plans
Brenham city officials addressed public concerns regarding the planned Viridien technology facility, clarifying that it is not a data center or cryptocurrency site. Mayor Atwood Kenjura highlighted the project's transparency, noting it will use less water than traditional data centers and that electric service will be provided by Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative. The City Council is set to consider designating the property as a reinvestment zone in January 2026, which could allow for potential tax phase-in agreements.

Brenham city officials clarified that the planned technology facility by Viridien is not a data center, cryptocurrency site, or cloud-storage operation, addressing public concerns following a petition with over 1,000 signatures. The project has been under review for three years, following the standard public approval process.
Mayor Atwood Kenjura emphasized the project's transparency and clarified that it will utilize less water than traditional data centers through air-based cooling technologies. Electric service will be provided by Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative.
Discussions with Viridien began in April 2022, leading to a land sale closure on July 8, 2025. The City Council will consider designating the property as a reinvestment zone on January 8, 2026, which would enable potential tax phase-in agreements.
