Bridget Brink's Lithium Holdings Under Scrutiny Amid Congressional Campaign
Bridget Brink, a Democratic congressional candidate from Michigan, faced criticism for owning shares in Albemarle, a major lithium producer, during her tenure as U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. The scrutiny arises from potential conflicts of interest related to U.S. diplomatic efforts for mineral rights in Ukraine, which has significant lithium reserves critical for electric vehicle batteries.

Bridget Brink purchased shares valued between $1,000 and $15,000 in Albemarle in June 2023 while serving as U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. Critics allege a conflict of interest due to her involvement in U.S.-Ukraine mineral rights negotiations, which aimed to secure preferential access to Ukraine's lithium resources.
Brink's primary opponent has highlighted these holdings as undermining public trust in government. Reports indicate Ukraine contains approximately 500,000 tons of lithium oxide, making it strategically important as demand for lithium rises.
The State Department ethics office had previously advised officials, including Brink, to divest from stocks like Albemarle. Brink's campaign asserts she was not involved in negotiations for the mineral rights deal. The growing interest in lithium resources underscores the resource's geopolitical significance and potential for ethical controversies in political contexts.
