Broomfield Enacts 18-Month Moratorium on New Data Centers
Broomfield City Council has approved an 18-month halt on data center developments utilizing 10 megawatts or more of power. This decision allows for the establishment of new zoning and water use regulations amid increasing concerns about environmental impacts.

Broomfield City Council has unanimously approved an 18-month moratorium on new data centers that consume 10 megawatts or more of power. This pause aims to provide time for local officials to create regulations regarding zoning and water usage, coinciding with anticipated state regulations for data centers in 2027.
Currently, Broomfield hosts four data-processing companies and one larger data center that is designed for 20 megawatts but operates at 6.3 megawatts. The chosen threshold for the moratorium reflects concerns over environmental and energy impacts from large facilities. The council's unanimous vote indicates strong community support for addressing these issues.
