Buckley Base Selected for Potential Nuclear Microreactor Site by Air Force
The Air Force has selected Buckley Space Force Base in Aurora as a potential site for a nuclear microreactor, aiming to enhance energy independence and reliability by 2030. This initiative forms part of the military's Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations program, which includes two other bases and addresses urgent energy needs amidst increasing concerns over security and power supply disruptions.

The U.S. Air Force has proposed a nuclear microreactor at Buckley Space Force Base, targeting operational status by 2030. This reactor would generate less than 10 megawatts of power and remain independent of the larger grid.
Buckley is one of three bases selected for the Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations program, alongside Malmstrom AFB and Joint Base San Antonio. Concerns have emerged from local officials regarding safety, waste management, and community consultation, with public engagement planned by the Air Force once details are finalized.
Critics highlight potential risks, including water usage and waste disposal, although proponents argue that microreactors require significantly less water and can be made portable. Strict federal regulations will govern the reactor's deployment, necessitating licenses and safety plans from relevant authorities.
