Bulgaria Opens National Repository for Radioactive Waste
Bulgaria has completed the National Repository for Radioactive Waste, a facility aimed at safe waste management from nuclear activities. This development enhances the country's nuclear infrastructure and environmental protection efforts.

The National Repository for Radioactive Waste (NKhRAO) in Bulgaria, inaugurated after 15 years of construction, will serve as a storage solution for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste. Located near the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, the facility will not accept foreign radioactive materials and aims to be filled over the next 60 years.
It features 66 disposal cells, with the first stage operational and capable of storing 6,336 containers. Funded primarily by a €76 million grant from the Kozloduy International Decommissioning Support Fund and national co-financing of approximately BGN34 million, the repository is positioned to enhance Bulgaria's nuclear safety infrastructure and may offer expertise for future international projects.
