Bulgaria to Adopt Euro in 2026; Romania Plans Euro Transition by 2030-2032
Bulgaria will adopt the Euro on January 1, 2026, enhancing its economic stability. In contrast, Romania plans to initiate discussions on Euro adoption between 2030 and 2032, with estimates suggesting a transition may take at least a decade.
Bulgaria has a population of approximately 6.5 million, while Romania's population is estimated at 18.5 to 19 million. In trade, Bulgaria exports goods worth €5.6 billion to Romania, while Romania exports €4.1 billion to Bulgaria.
Bulgaria's GDP is projected at €100 billion for 2025, compared to Romania's €380 billion. Bulgaria has signed agreements with Westinghouse Electric Company for two nuclear reactors at Kozlodui, expected operational by 2035.
Romania is modernizing its Cernavodă reactor with investments of €3 billion. Additionally, Romania will partner with EDF for a pumped-storage hydroelectric project by 2026. Romania has been included in the AI Factories initiative, planning to host a supercomputer by 2027 or 2028.
