Burlington's 2025 Net Zero Energy Roadmap Update Highlights Emission Reductions and EV Growth
Burlington's greenhouse gas emissions from thermal and transportation sectors have decreased by 17.8% as of 2025 from 2018 levels. Key developments include the installation of new public EV fast chargers and the launch of an AI chatbot to enhance customer support.
As of 2025, Burlington has reported a 17.8% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in both thermal and ground transportation sectors compared to 2018. The ground transportation sector alone saw a 24.3% decrease in fossil fuel consumption since 2019, attributed to an increase in electric vehicles (EVs) and a reduction in gasoline vehicles.
Notably, 1,465 EVs and plug-in hybrids were registered, marking a 521% rise since 2018. Two new DC fast chargers have been introduced downtown, facilitating further EV adoption. Despite moderate emissions rebounds due to colder weather, 2025 thermal fossil fuel consumption aligns with 2024 levels, showcasing a stable trend partly due to over 3,400 heat pumps deployed.
Continued efforts are needed to maintain momentum in building emissions reductions. The implementation of BED's Net Zero Energy and Grid Reliability Revenue Bond is set to enhance charging infrastructure.
