Byron Shire Council has initiated a trial of a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric vehicle for waste collection in Byron Bay, starting December 23. Operated by Solo Resource Recovery, the trial will last three weeks, with potential for extension based on results.
This vehicle is one of the few hydrogen-powered trucks in New South Wales, aimed at informing future shifts from diesel to renewable energy in waste management. The trial is part of the Council's commitment to reduce its carbon footprint and explore alternative energy sources. The hydrogen truck is designed to be similar in size to traditional waste trucks and aims to reduce noise pollution during operations.
