Cabinet Approves $10M IDB Loan for Caye Caulker Wastewater Project
WATER INFRASTRUCTURE & DESALINATION
The Belize Cabinet has approved a US$10 million loan from the Inter-American Development Bank for a wastewater project in Caye Caulker Village, pending House of Representatives approval. The project aims to replace existing septic systems with a centralized wastewater treatment system using a vacuum pipe network.
The total project cost is estimated at US$13 million, which includes the loan, contributions from Belize Water Services Limited, and a grant. Implementation will begin with a six-month procurement process, followed by three years of construction, initially focused on south Caye Caulker. Public consultations indicate community support for the initiative.
