The Indian Cabinet has greenlit a Rs 26,069.50 crore investment for the 1,720 MW Kamala Hydro Electric Project in Arunachal Pradesh. This project aims to enhance power supply, manage peak demand, and contribute to regional infrastructure and socio-economic development.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved an investment of Rs 26,069.50 crore for the Kamala Hydro Electric Project (HEP) in Arunachal Pradesh, with an expected completion timeline of 96 months. This project will have an installed capacity of 1,720 MW and is projected to generate 6,870 million units (MU) of clean energy annually.
The Government of India will provide Rs 4,743.98 crore for flood moderation and Rs 1,340 crore for enabling infrastructure, including roads and bridges. Additionally, Rs 750 crore will be allocated as Central Financial Assistance.
The project will also provide 12% free power to Arunachal Pradesh and improve local socio-economic conditions through infrastructure development and employment opportunities. Other significant hydropower projects in the region include Subansiri Lower, Dibang Multipurpose, and Etalin. The approval reflects a focus on sustainable energy and regional development but may face challenges related to environmental impact and local community engagement.
