The Cabinet approved tenders for a 160 MW/640 MWh battery energy storage system to strengthen the electricity grid. This initiative, proposed by Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody, aims to store solar-generated electricity to address challenges in the national power grid.

The project will install 10 MW/40 MWh systems at 16 substations across the country. Tenders were initially called on 30 July 2025, with the deadline extended to 14 October 2025, receiving 153 bids. Following evaluations, the Cabinet approved the awards, ensuring compliance with procurement procedures.

The project will be implemented using a Build, Own, and Operate (BOO) model, as decided on 28 April 2025. This storage system is expected to enhance grid stability and support renewable energy integration.
