California ISO Proposes $7 Billion in Transmission Upgrades Over Next Decade
The California Independent Systems Operator (CAISO) proposes $7 billion in upgrades to the power grid to support clean energy goals and rising electricity demand. This includes 38 transmission projects, driven by increased loads from AI data centers, electrification, and electric vehicle adoption.

The California Independent Systems Operator plans $7 billion in transmission upgrades over the next decade to accommodate a projected load growth of 15 gigawatts by 2035. This proposal includes 38 projects, significantly influenced by the rise of data centers, electric vehicles, and building electrification.
The financial impact on ratepayers is yet to be determined and is subject to regulatory review by the California Public Utilities Commission. The draft plan, developed in collaboration with the CPUC and the California Energy Commission, forecasts a need for more than 74 gigawatts of additional capacity by 2035.
Concerns exist regarding the affordability of electricity amidst the planned investments, particularly with the average utility bill rising by 33.7% over the past five years. The upcoming public meeting on April 15 will allow stakeholder input on the proposal.
