California Launches First Solar Canal Project with Project Nexus
Project Nexus, California's inaugural solar canal initiative, began construction in 2022, aiming to enhance water and energy conservation. It exemplifies a collaboration between TID, UC Merced, and others, potentially supplying power for 2 million homes annually.

Project Nexus, initiated in 2022, represents a collaboration among Turlock Irrigation District, UC Merced, and Solar AquaGrid, LLC. The pilot program, located near Hickman, aims to cover California's canals with solar panels to enhance water conservation, generate clean energy, and reduce land use.
A study found that solar panels on all 4,000 miles of exposed canals could power about 2 million homes and conserve significant water supplies. Initial results show a reduction of up to 70% in evaporation and 85% in weed growth.
The California Solar Canal Initiative will further explore optimal locations for solar projects, potentially influencing future energy strategies in the state. This initiative may set a precedent for global applications in renewable energy and land conservation.
