Yuquot Microgrid Project Aims for Energy Independence

A microgrid project in Yuquot, Canada, is set to cost $12 million and aims to increase energy self-sufficiency, primarily through a floating turbine generating 200 kilowatts from wave energy and solar panels providing 50 kilowatts. Construction will begin this month and is expected to create approximately 10 temporary jobs, lasting until the end of 2027, with power generation anticipated for summer 2028.
Over 60% of funding has been secured from provincial and federal sources. This initiative aligns with the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation's broader goals of reviving cultural ties and boosting tourism, with plans for additional cabins and an interpretive center at Yuquot.
