Sophia Space and Caltech Develop Modular Space Data Centers
Sophia Space and Caltech have designed a modular architecture for space-based data centers to address unique thermal management challenges. This innovation facilitates scalable computing solutions in orbit, which could transform data processing capabilities in space.

Sophia Space and Caltech have developed a modular architecture, termed 'Thermal Integrated LEO Edge' (Tile), for space data centers. Each Tile includes data processing units, solar panels for energy, and cooling panels to radiate waste heat into space.
This design allows for scalable data centers by combining multiple Tiles linked via fiber-optic cables. The effort is aligned with Caltech's Space-Based Solar Power project, which successfully transmitted energy from orbit in 2023.
Sophia Space applied for a patent in October 2024, which was granted in July 2025. The challenges of cooling in space remain a critical barrier, making this architectural innovation significant for future extraterrestrial computing solutions.
