Port of Brisbane Integrates Solar and Battery Storage for Grid Support
The Port of Brisbane has enhanced its cruise terminal's renewable energy capabilities with 240 kW of solar power and a 1,145 kWh battery, aiming to reduce grid reliance. This initiative is part of a broader trend where commercial batteries are utilized not only for backup but also as active grid assets, optimizing energy usage and costs.

The Port of Brisbane has added 240 kW of solar and a 1,145 kWh battery to its cruise terminal, boosting total onsite solar capacity to over 1 MW. The battery, funded partially by a $168,396 grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, will test its effectiveness in shifting solar energy use to peak demand times, thereby reducing grid dependency.
This project is among 39 similar battery installations by Hydro Tasmania across Australia, supported by a total investment exceeding $7.7 million. With 150 cruise ship calls annually, the terminal's energy demands often peak outside of solar generation hours, making the battery's dual role crucial for cost-effective energy management. The project reflects a shift towards integrating energy storage with generation, enhancing the resilience of energy systems.
