Gujarat Drafts Battery Energy Storage Policy to Enhance Renewable Power Utilization

The Gujarat government is drafting a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) policy to facilitate the storage of excess solar power generated during daylight hours for use after sunset. This policy aims to enhance the reliability of renewable energy, improve grid flexibility, and support the state's goal of over 100GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Current challenges include excess solar generation during peak hours, which often cannot be absorbed by the grid. The policy's framework will address technical, safety, cybersecurity, and environmental standards, while also promoting investment in battery manufacturing.

Stakeholder consultations will ensure alignment with the power sector's operational needs. With Gujarat's leading position in renewable energy capacity, effective battery storage is crucial for meeting growing electricity demands from various sectors.
