Calvert County Planning Commission Discusses Data Center Amendments; Washington County Proposes Moratorium on Data Centers
Calvert County's Planning Commission reviewed data center text amendments on March 18, responding to a request from the Board of County Commissioners. The amendments were informed by data center regulations from Northern Virginia. Meanwhile, Washington County, Tennessee will vote on March 23 to potentially establish a one-year moratorium on data centers, initially proposed by the Planning Commission, to study their environmental and infrastructural impacts.

Calvert County's Planning Commission met on March 18 to discuss data center text amendments requested by the Board of County Commissioners. The Planning and Zoning Department's Director Jason Babcock noted that input was gathered from other regions with data centers, particularly Northern Virginia.
Mixed reactions from the Commission highlighted a comprehensive environmental approach but raised concerns over insufficient research on data center impacts. Concurrently, Washington County, Tennessee's Commission will vote on March 23 to implement a one-year moratorium on data centers, following a recommendation from the Planning Commission. This moratorium would allow for a study of their infrastructural and environmental implications, with a potential extension beyond June 2027.
