Canada Invests in Two Spaceports Amid Environmental Concerns
The Canadian federal government has allocated $200 million for a spaceport in Canso, Nova Scotia, set to enable eight annual satellite launches. A second spaceport near St. Lawrence, Newfoundland, is under development by NordSpace, with a capacity for 20 launches per year, emphasizing the need for environmental responsibility in satellite deployment.

Canada's federal government announced a $200 million investment in a spaceport project in Canso, Nova Scotia, aiming for eight launches annually. A parallel initiative by NordSpace in St. Lawrence, Newfoundland, could facilitate 20 launches per year, enhancing the country’s strategic autonomy.
However, the Canso project faces opposition due to potential air pollution, water contamination, and social impacts. These concerns echo global challenges faced by existing spaceports. As Canada joins the ranks of countries capable of satellite launches, it must ensure rigorous environmental compliance and robust regulations to mitigate risks associated with increasing orbital debris and its implications for both local communities and global ecosystems.
