Canada Unveils Updated River-Class Destroyer Design with New Combat System Enhancements
On March 24, 2026, the Royal Canadian Navy revealed an updated scale model of the River-class destroyer, which is currently in production with the lead ship, HMCS Fraser, under construction. The program includes plans for up to 15 ships, with initial deliveries expected in the early 2030s. The updated design maintains the core architecture but features significant modifications to weapon systems and sensor capabilities, prioritizing anti-submarine warfare and interoperability with allied fleets. Total acquisition costs are projected at over $77 billion.

The Royal Canadian Navy presented an updated model of the River-class destroyer on March 24, 2026. The lead ship, HMCS Fraser, is under construction since April 2025, as part of a program for up to 15 ships.
Initial deliveries are set for the early 2030s, with total costs exceeding $77 billion. The design maintains the original hull and propulsion systems but alters weapon layouts to simplify integration and enhance anti-submarine capabilities.
Key changes include replacing the Leonardo 127/64 gun with a Mk 45 5-inch gun and revising missile systems. The ship will have a displacement of 7,800-8,080 tons, support a crew of 210, and operate with a maximum speed of 27 knots.
