Canada's Army Faces Tank Modernization Challenges Amid NATO Commitments
Canada's Army is addressing a critical tank modernization issue due to an aging fleet and recent equipment donations. With a decade-long timeline for a new armored force, immediate operational effectiveness in NATO deployments remains a pressing concern.

Canada's Army modernization strategy, Inflection Point 2025, indicates the sole armored regiment has only one squadron of serviceable tanks. The Department of National Defence closed an RFI on July 13 for future tank fleet options and a medium cavalry vehicle, which may lead to a significant upgrade, potentially involving two heavy and two medium cavalry regiments.
The current Leopard fleet is expected to remain operational until approximately 2035, while a successor platform is not anticipated before 2030. The Army must manage this transition while maintaining operational credibility in Latvia, where its brigade has been renewed until 2029. Insufficient funding for equipment sustainment is a critical issue that could hinder the Army's modernization efforts, risking operational readiness as the fleet ages.
