Canada's Hydrogen Strategy and Oil & Gas Industry Role
Canada's hydrogen strategy aims for reduced carbon intensity in hydrogen production, with fossil fuels playing a key role. The transition to green hydrogen is supported by blue hydrogen production, utilizing existing oil and gas infrastructure, particularly in Western Canada.

Canada plans a 30-year hydrogen strategy focused on decreasing carbon intensity while leveraging fossil fuel infrastructure. A study by GDM Pipelines indicates that 76% of Western Canada's pipelines may accommodate 5% hydrogen blends, and 65% may handle 20% blends.
The move towards blue hydrogen is crucial for scaling up production and infrastructure in the near to mid-term. However, challenges in hydrogen transportation, including pipeline suitability and safety risks, need to be addressed.
The federal government’s draft Clean Fuel Regulations aim to tackle efficiency issues in hydrogen production and transportation, while defining blue and green hydrogen standards. Successful implementation could position Canada to compete in a global hydrogen economy.
