Cannes Launches First Green Hydrogen Production Station in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur
In a significant step towards sustainable energy, construction has commenced on Cannes' first electrolytic hydrogen production station, marking a pivotal moment for the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. The facility, which is expected to begin operations by December, will generate up to 800 kilograms of green hydrogen each day, utilizing recycled water from the Aquaviva wastewater treatment plant.
The project was inaugurated with the ceremonial laying of the first stone, attended by key figures including David Lisnard, the mayor of Cannes, and representatives from Hynamics, the EDF group's hydrogen subsidiary. This station not only highlights Cannes' commitment to renewable energy but also positions the region as a pioneer in hydrogen production through water electrolysis, harnessing treated wastewater to promote circular water reuse.
The electrolyser will facilitate the decarbonization of the local public transport network, with plans for 41 fuel cell buses, 14 of which are expected to be operational by 2026. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to significantly cut carbon emissions, aiming to eliminate over 3,228 tonnes of CO2 annually.
Lisnard emphasized that this project embodies a concrete energy transition, rooted in scientific principles and innovative practices. By reusing treated wastewater to produce locally sourced hydrogen, Cannes is showcasing how sustainable energy solutions can address pressing climate and economic challenges. As the region advances its hydrogen hub, it embodies a commitment to green energy that not only transforms public mobility but also sets a precedent for future ecological initiatives in France.
