Cape Town Initiates Major Tenders for Electricity, Water, and Mobility Projects
Cape Town will begin issuing tenders to reduce electricity costs and enhance water security and urban mobility. The City plans to appoint an electricity trading company to supply additional power to the municipal grid, aiming for cheaper renewable energy.
Cape Town has secured about 300 megawatts of additional electricity and is developing 60 megawatts of its own generation capacity. Tenders for large-scale desalination and water reuse plants will also be released, with construction starting around September 2027.
The City is funding aquifer projects to supply 80 million litres of water per day. Furthermore, Cape Town is expanding electricity access in informal settlements and testing electric buses for public transport, with plans to deploy them by 2027.
