Capitola Council Opposes Offshore Drilling and Unveils Solar Project at Library
At the January 22 City Council meeting, Capitola's council authorized the mayor to submit a letter opposing the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management's proposed 11th National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program. Capitola has actively opposed offshore drilling and onshore facilities since the 1980s to protect ocean ecosystems.
The council also highlighted concerns over seabed mining for manganese nodules, emphasizing the need for continued opposition to harmful practices. In collaboration with Santa Cruz and Save our Shores, a memorandum of understanding was executed to enhance regional efforts against drilling and mining. Additionally, Capitola is celebrating the installation of a solar panel and battery storage project at the Capitola Branch Library, which will enable the library to operate as an energy-neutral facility, marking a significant sustainability milestone for the city.
