Caribbean Leaders Discuss Coordinated Action for Shipping Decarbonization in Trinidad and Tobago
Caribbean policymakers and financiers convened in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, on January 29-30, to discuss decarbonization of the shipping sector through coordinated action across sectors and countries. The roundtable, organized by the IMO's GreenVoyage2050 Programme and the Global MTCC Network, focused on creating evidence-based planning and investment-ready pathways.
Key recommendations included enhancing regional coordination, knowledge-sharing, capacity building, and investment facilitation. The discussions connected the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy with regional implementation efforts, emphasizing the need to align policy, infrastructure, and finance.
Participants highlighted findings from the Jamaica Maritime Alternative Fuels Study to inform decision-making and explored credible fuel pathways and barriers to adoption. The second day addressed investment mobilization, with development banks outlining strategies to enhance project bankability. Attendees also visited the ammonia-fuelled ship Fortescue Green Pioneer to observe alternative fuel technology.
