Catalonia Targets Data Centers as Strategic Infrastructure for Investment
Catalonia's Generalitat is positioning data centers as essential infrastructure rather than mere investments, aiming for 2,000 MW capacity by 2035. This initiative faces ecological opposition and technical challenges, affecting potential growth in digital infrastructure.
The Generalitat of Catalonia seeks to establish data centers as vital infrastructure, with plans to develop 26 zones to support nearly 2,000 MW of capacity by 2035. Approximately ten projects are in advanced stages, targeting a progressive output of 300 MW to 500 MW.
However, opposition from environmental groups poses significant challenges, especially related to energy consumption and water usage. The region's energy supply, reliant on Redeia and Endesa, is critical for these facilities, with the Móra la Nova AI gigafactory already securing connections.
Financial sustainability is uncertain, particularly for firms like OpenAI that may depend on credit for massive investments. The lifespan of microchips also raises concerns, as they may not align with investment amortization periods.
