CATL and Alfen Partner for 5 GWh Sodium-Ion Battery Deployment in Europe
CATL and Alfen N.V. have signed an agreement for deploying 5 GWh of sodium-ion battery energy storage systems in Europe, with operations starting in 2027. This collaboration aims to enhance energy storage diversity, reduce costs, and support Europe's transition to zero-carbon energy sources.

CATL and Alfen N.V. have entered a Memorandum of Understanding to implement 5 GWh of sodium-ion battery energy storage systems in Western Europe, beginning in 2027. This partnership builds on previous lithium-ion projects and aims to diversify energy storage solutions while minimizing exposure to lithium price volatility.
The Tianheng sodium-ion battery offers a lifespan of 25 years, a round-trip efficiency increase of nearly 2%, and compatibility with existing LFP systems. The agreement allows CATL to gain practical experience with sodium-ion batteries in European grid applications, supporting product adaptation to local standards. This collaboration could enhance both companies' competitive positions in large-scale storage tenders across Europe.
